Similar to many trees we saw at the UBC Botanical Garden a couple weekends ago... and I remember trees like this in Hawaii as well (20 years ago!). One perspective is that "it takes over it's host"... another is that it is one of "The Giving Tree" (book by Shel Silverstein)... giving itself to host other life/living organisms!
